This article examines the limited measurement stability of non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) carbon monoxide sensors due to zero-signal drift and cross-sensitivity to interfering components of the gas mixture. It is shown that traditional reference signal generation schemes based on an additional optical channel do not provide the required measurement stability due to uneven degradation of optoelectronic components, contamination of optical surfaces, and temperature effects. An alternative approach to generating a reference signal for an NDIR carbon monoxide sensor is proposed. This approach utilizes a heterogeneous catalyst that neutralizes carbon monoxide through an oxidation reaction. The operating principle of the proposed gas-dynamic and optical design is discussed, and a comparative analysis with traditional NDIR sensor designs is conducted. It is established that the use of a catalytic filter allows for the generation of a reference signal that is insensitive to carbon monoxide and reduces the impact of cross-sensitivity to water vapor. The obtained results can be used in the development of high-precision NDIR sensors for use in detecting trace concentrations of carbon monoxide. Keywords: NDIR sensor, carbon monoxide, carbon monoxide, catalytic filter, hetero-geneous catalysis, CO oxidation.
