The paper solves the urgent problem of determining the size of internal defects in machine parts and mechanisms by the ultrasonic method. A mathematical apparatus has been developed for the etalon-free determination of the size of a defect during ultrasonic inspection, taking into account the attenuation of ultrasound along a lateral cylindrical reflector in a controlled object, with normal input of an ultrasonic wave. An algorithm and software for the ethalon-free determination of the equivalent defect size are presented. Experimental studies of the proposed method have been conducted. Keywords: defect, sensor, diagnostics, non-destructive testing, ultrasonic method, algorithm, program.
